The Berghotel Schmittenhöhe

A place full of stories and traditions

This place has been conquered by travelers and adventurers since 1874. So 150 years of accommodation on the Schmittenhöhe.

The origins of the hotel date back to 1873, when Rudolf Riemann built the first path to the "Schmidtner-Höhe", as it was called at the time. A path that not only brought hikers, but also adventurers and dreamers closer to the summit.

The Alpine Club acquired the small shelter hut on the summit in 1874 and transformed it into a cozy shelter with 11 sleeping places.
The history of the mountain hotel took off when Josef Fill acquired the inn in 1876 and turned it into a place of comfort and hospitality. Albert and Mathilde Hubinger took over the hotel in 1877 and continued to run it with passion and dedication.

The royal presence was not far away when Empress Elisabeth (known as Sissi or Sisi) visited the Schmittenhöhe in August 1885 and enjoyed the majestic view. Emperor Franz I followed her example and spent a night at the mountain hotel in July 1893.

Times changed when the Schmittenhöhebahn opened in December 1927 as the first cable car in Salzburg, ushering in a new era of mountain tourism.

But dark days were also to come when the hotel was confiscated by the US occupying forces during the Second World War and served as a ski training center.

In 1955, Mr. Franz Gramshammer stepped onto the scene and expanded the mountain hotel at 2000m altitude into a place of luxury and relaxation. His vision for the hotel is reflected in every detail, while the hotel even became the setting for several Heimat films in the 1960s.

A new era dawned when Herwig Schiefer showed interest in the mountain hotel in 1985. After successful negotiations, he finally took over the hotel and continued to run it with great success. But even in the most difficult times, the Berghotel proved its strength when a devastating fire broke out in October 2008. By joining forces, they managed to rebuild and reopen the hotel - a symbol of resilience and community spirit.

Today, the Berghotel Schmittenhöhe stands as a symbol of hospitality, tradition and unforgettable experiences in the Austrian Alps - a true legend in the middle of the mountain landscape of Zell am See.

A jewel like Franz Gramshammer's small alpine hut, which is still lovingly run today and delights guests with Austrian tradition and culinary delights.
